Apparently when the artist (Arkhip Kuindzhi) painted this he used Bitumen, and it is considerably darker now than when it was made.

There is an amazing show up in Stockholm until January regarding " The Wanderers", a group of painters who rebelled against the Russian art school system and branched off for themselves. I'm not going to go in to that too much at this point, Im merely going to post every single painting in that show high rez on this blog in segments with a few days inbetween. This was done from a googled photograph (gasp shock!) but it was enjoyable none the less! I was looking at a few of my favourite painters for inspiration on how to simplify areas and not use the pic slavishly. The biggest difficulties lies in the drawing, since its hard to get your head around how it works in 3d space. Easier if you're in front of it, so you can go round, "understand" how the car is built.

Whats that Dick Blick, you want how much for a taboret? NOT BLOODY LIKELY!

Again, IKEA comes to the rescue with the perfect substitute, sold under the name "Bygel" its the bees knees.

It stands just under 1 meter, which means you can stand too. It has a plastic drawer that opens both ways, it has 3 hooks, and three cup holders I have yet to figure out how to use. I might make some brush holder pots or something. It also holds my glass pallet at an angle if I want to go mobile and paint a larger painting somewhere else in the studio.

In short its PERFECT, and a fine bargain at 30 bucks.

Easy cheap Soltek hack

This is a very simple solution but quite handy for making the palette stay in a horizontal position rather than the vertical "in the box" position.

Simply buy two small clips that fold over themselves, pin them where you want them and remove one of the metal clip "handles" clips by pinching it.

The shape of the remaining "handle" will hold the palette in place, essentially jamming it against the main stem and one of the wings. The palette and now withstand small gusts of wind, ensuring you wont have to retrieve it from the bushes. Or even worse, from the shirt of a curious onlooker or the face of some kid that is slowly driving you crazy.

No need to fiddle about with the clips either when closing the lid, since they flip over! Just make sure you clean the area from paint.

Being in the middle of nowhere painting, be it woods, meadows or in a city, I usually bring a packed lunch. Its more cost effective and I like having control over what kinds of food I eat energy wise. Unfortunately more often than not, cutlery gets left behind and I'm reduced to using the palette knife as a utensil.

No more! This handy little keychainpocketknife has everything I could ever forget to bring with me, including a can opener, so I can eat cold baked beans straight out of the tin in true class.

It also has a screwpull, so the day I graduate from screw-tops to corks, that wont be a problem either!

...Well, it beats using the top of a cottage cheese container as a spoon sitting on a parkbench like a dirty hobo.

Im sure Im earning some kind of merit-badge for this.

When going on painting trips, something that can become increasingly problematic is the accumulation of wet panels and canvases, and where to dry them. If you are on the cheap, staying in a hostel, your wet panels will slowly start to take over the room, much to the annoyance of your fellow travelers who aren't too keen on stepping over your little masterpieces, scattered all over the place.

I was strolling tghrough IKEA the other day, and stumbled the "Rational Variera" collapsible pot-cover-holder. It will hold 6 wet panels and stretched canvases, and hopefully by the time its full, the first few will be dry. (Liquin man myself when Im traveling, so they are usually dry the next day). Its good for space saving in the studio too.

The little arms screw off, so it will fit easier in your luggage.

And best of all? Its 5 bucks...

Most of these are done on 300 gsm Saunders Waterford paper. It has a slighlty warm tone to it compared to my usual Arches Coldpress, but I like it. It also comes in a ultra white variety, Ill have to try that next. Warping is minimal in these small sizes, and if it does occur, the whole paper lifts evenly, unlike the Arches that goes in waves. It seems to take a bit longer to dry and subsequently I'm sometimes to eager and go in before it has the correct dampness (adding to the stressfactor that is a watercolor) It really is like trying to cook five things simultaneously when you only have four hotplates, but the whole meal still needs to be done at the same time. Most enjoyable! Unless otherwise specified, these are 13x17 cm.

Even though I have the amazing piece of kit know as the Soltek Easel, it is still pretty cumbersome, and not very discreet. I wanted to have something small, more inconspicuous to set up and paint, maybe at a cafe or on a park bench.

I converted a small panel carrier I made a while ago to a fully functioning lap-box. It still houses a panel carrier compartment underneath the makeshift slide out tray.

It will hold one 17x30 cm panel, or 3 10x17 cm panels. I have ordered a bunch of empty 20 ml tubes so that I can fill them with paint from larger tubes, more economical that way. I can also fit some brushes, box of Kleenex, small medium jar and a palate knife.

I fitted some sturdy rubber feet on the bottom, and a tripod mount in case I want to bring that along too. The extra loophole for the carrier strap is there so that I can secure the box from tipping by fastening it underneath my legs whilst sitting down, so I can have both hands free. The lid stays up by a simple rubber band fastened at the back.

One problem when painting out doors is how the hell do you transport your fresh panels to the safety of your studio, without smooshing, brushing, dropping, sticking or mucking them up? And if you are out for a day, what if you wanted multiple panels with you for different vistas?

The main issue I found with most commercially available carriers was that they are static, they accommodate one or a few set sizes. Its Annoying when you have a ton of different sized panels, (specifically if you find a nice frame in an antique shop , and want a panel to fit it)

So Ive been playing about with making my own, Macguyver-ish lightweight carrier, and after butchering my french easel (very satisfying by the way) I got some nice brass bolts, screws and hinges, and rummaging about finding various strips of wood around the studio, I made this. A dynamic wet panel carrier that will accommodate any sizes up to 35x43 cm (thats 14x17 " for you yanks).

There are 3 "slots". The middle one is static for one large panel. The outer two are adjustable. With 2 screws on each side I can fasten up to four panels of any size not exceeding the box dimensions, allowing me to carry up to 5 panels at once. I can also fit a stretched canvas in there if I leave the middle slot empty, and still bring panels with me on the opposite side. The width of my panels are 3 or 4 mm. (Birch plywood of course!)

I hope this was helpful for anyone else getting annoyed with keeping their work safe.

at a "Gåra-målar" show that a local county organized. A "Gåra-målare" is a genre of art that was practiced in Sweden in the 1880s to about the 1950s. Traveling painters, more often than not self-taught would roam the countryside until they happened upon a farm. They would then paint a painting of it, often with perpetual blue skies and flowers in full bloom (even if it was painted in the dead of winter) The whole farm was to be represented, and lots of details where demanded by the owners. This could often lead to some pretty... inventive solutions to perspective problems.
Here are a few magazine articles with some photos of me painting away. A great way to spend a Sunday, with some very nice and honest people.

I changed to Transparent Yellow (Nickel Azo) W&N and Thalo green blue shade instead of Viridian and Cad yellow light, and I really like the new hues they are giving me. Tinting strenght is strong, so Im still in the learning curve when it comes to controlling saturation, but hey, better over saturated than under, nothing worse than wishy-washy watercolors!

I did see Paul Sandby, Christian Köbke, Caspar David Friedrich, had high tea at the Ritz, and met Vladimir, a Russian Nuclear Scientist who salted his beer, ate two full plates of fish and chips, spoke no English but knew all the Wanderers by name when we communicated via Iphone.

Despite various stresses, trials and tribulations, it was a great trip!

Argh! The GLARE!

After getting thoroughly annoyed at sunlight glinting off my shiny chrome ferrules on the paintbrush, I decided to do something about it.

Bring out sandpaper, enamel paint and a disposable brush. Sand the ferrule and paint on the black matte enamel paint, taking great care not to get paint on the bristles. Let themn thoroughly dry for 4 days, and paint pleine air glare free! Process needs to be repeated every few months, and some of the enamel paint will come off in little flecks, but Im fine with that, as long as I dont get that retina-burning sun reflection when Im out.

"Less farting about, more painting!" some would say, and you'd probably be right.

Lead primed Plywood

Nate the mule brought down a sheet of Birch plywood from Gothenburg, cut in to more manageable 12x16 inch panels, and we had a grand old day sanding and priming (Actually Gus and Nate did the sanding and priming, I think I came up with some sort of excuse)

After sanding they were primed with 2 coats of regular gelatin from the department store. This is an age old primer, and much the same as hide glue, according to Nate.

After that they got a thin layer of Michael Hardings Cremnitz white, mixed with 15% calcium carbonate for some added tooth and linseed oil to make it easier to apply. Application was done with a soft sponge.

They were then put in the racks and dried for about 2 weeks,

then I put on the second coat, to make up for not sanding the boards. They will now be left to dry for about a month. Dont sand in between these coats unless you have adequate protection. Lead dust is no good inhaling.

Cant wait to give them a try!

Color tests of the elusive Alizarine!

After reading James Gurneys blogpost about light-fastness, and www.handprint.com ´s scary tests, I decided to do my own. Since I never glaze (so far) I'm more interested in how Alizarine behaves in mixtures, rather than on its own. So that's what I did.

Aliz. Crim is notorious for being fugitive, as in it will fade to nothing under direct light. Most pigments have a light-fastness rating of 1 or 2, (pretty good) but Alizarine has 3 (Pretty bad) according to the ASTM (American Society for Testing Materials) Since its such a lovely pigment we keep on using it.

There are alternatives, like the Alizarine Permanent that I'm trying out, but instead of being a single pigment color like the regular Alizarine, it consists of 3 pigments, which in theory should muddy up your mixtures faster. (The more pigments you mix together, the faster it will turn to brown, and if there are already 3 pigments in your one tube of paint, well then you have fewer mixtures to make before you go brown or grey. Not that theres anything wrong with that, but I like to make that choice with my own pigments! Preferably, all your paints on your pallate should be single pigment paints for just this very reason)

I had a tube of Alizarine Crimson Sennelier, and a tube of Permanent Alizarine by Gamblin, which is what the famed Richard Schmidt recommends using. They are going head to head on this board coated with Galeria Acrylic gesso. which in turn was coated with a thin layer of Liquin, an alkyd dryer made by Winsor Newton. the Viridian is from Rembrandt, the Titanium white from W&N, and the Blue from Gamblin.

After the swatches were dry, I placed a thick black paper strip and taped it down with some acid free tape, to assure that no sunlight will penetrate and get to the hidden layers. I then place the board in direct sunlight. I will put the board in a plastic transparent bag, and just leave it outside throughout the summer.

Trying to simplify and get in the mood. Ive been doing Bargues drawings and outlines every day, and they are really helping me in seeing shapes and judging angles. Very meditative and frustrating at the same time, but extremely gratifying and helpful.

I did some upper arm studies

in watercolor, to start figuring out just how our wonderful body is built up. Essentially the upper arm is like a simplified sandwich, Bicep, triceps and the Bracialis in between. Sticking out under the bicep on the inner side is the small coracobrachialis.

Most of these arent seen unless you are quite muscular, but its good to know what goes on under the skin, and what muscles do what when you bend and twist. Essential knowledge if one wants to have an easier time working from imagination. A little anatomy goes a long way.

You might wonder where I managed to find this sunny spot in the middle of the winter! Well in fact, this is a quick warm up study of a famous landscape artist called William Merritt Chase. Studies like these are very valuable because I get a glimpse in to how a master solved similar problems that I am faced with when I go out painting.

This is quite small, only 20 cmx17 cm. It did the job though, and I am now better equipped for the summertime!

I love cafesketching, and since Båstad has very few cafes open during the winter, I thought Id head over to the library. Not very many people there either! I managed to capture a few unsuspectfulls.

Here are some of Sorollas tiny alla primas, done on whatever seemed to be at hand. THese were amazing, and great so see, especially after seeing the enormous pleine airs at the Prado. (No pics). His house was great, almost noone there, and you could take all the photos you wanted. Me and Nate even painted in his garden (complete disaster, ill post it later anyway) One amazing thing was that when we went to Toledo to paint, we could go to the same places where he painted from, and we did. Future posts will show them. It was such privilege to paint, and then go back to his house to see how HE painted it.
